Story & Sound

i made two discoveries this week: the moth and walter steding. steding used to open for bands like blondie and the ramones @ CBGB’s, and his cameo in blank generation knocked me out. i loved the spinning glasses, and experimental violin sounds. and the moth? it’s a podcast with some of the best stories, and storytellers i’ve heard in a long time.

Dead Smart Phone, Etc.

i almost forgot to mention the debut of laura’s smart phone at the mondo beep experiment last week. she downloaded some really cool synth apps that sounded awesome… until her phone went dead. fortunately she recorded this while it was still alive. the last stop for the night was the screenland crossroads arcade where the movie posters are almost as cool as the old games.

Parade of Freaks

i messed around with the webotribe and my electric guitar this morning… not sure how to describe the sound. i think it lies somewhere between a march and a menace… yeah, that’s it… a parade of freaks could be the name for this one.

Splat At Your Own Risk

the image above was created by a flick of the wrist and the push of a button. i was guided by voices and led to jacksonpollock.org. a word of warning: if you’re not careful it could happen to you too.

First Fridays Year End Recap

it was a strange first fridays in the crossroads two nights ago. laura met carol and i at the usual spot between wyandotte and baltimore on 18th street. carol had some crocheted hats to sell, but the cold temps kept the hip hoppers and the jazz band away. a few art lovers were still wandering in the night. our noise attracted a stream of consciousness poet and a prank mugging.

First Fridays Almost Here

this friday is the first friday of december, which means i’ll be back out on the sidewalk doing the mondo beep thing with old friends and new friends, old weird sounding gadgets and NEW weird sounding gadgets, and maybe an umbrella. fyi: i will have CD’s and various trinkets in exchange for cash tips. AND we’re all going to the screenland crossroads arcade when we’re done making noise on the street.

DIY Talkbox

i had no idea you could make a talkbox for 9 bucks. this is what happens when you insert a speaker into one end of a plunger, remove the handle and run a tube all the way to your mouth. oh yeah, don’t forget to plug in the guitar. thanks to hoove for the book that showed me how it’s done.

Glimpse at the Universe

this beatles songbook was one of the many treasures i brought back from my visit with hoovie last month. it charts out the chords to every lennon/mccartney song known to man, so i started recording one of them. this is what i have so far.

Girl Boy Girl Beep

trista and laura joined me at the crossroads art district last friday for my fourth mondo beep performance: they played the monotron, the bliptronic 5000, and an optical theremin. once they had a groove going, i put the circuit bent speak and math on auto pilot through the vintage delay pedal, then i played chords and chord patterns through my distorted fender strat. we carried on like this for almost an hour. as you can see from the pic, the crowd kept their distance.

First Friday Prep

boom box? check. monotron? check. distorted fender strat? check. delayed speak and math? check-eck-eck-eck… looks likeĀ  everything is a go for the next mondo beep show this friday in the crossroads art district.
