Joe’s Mini Series: The Little Red One

lilredguitarJoe is one of the coolest people I know. He was playing hillbilly music in honky tonk bars long before alt-country bands like BR-549 and Reverend Horton Heat made it cool. Joe is 93 or 94 now (I stopped counting after he hit 90), and he’s making super detailed little guitars. I was grinning ear to ear when he handed me a box full of them a few weeks ago. This is number one in Joe’s mini series: the little red one. I’ll post a picture of each guitar throughout August, and maybe into September.

  1. I knew a lady who played honky-tonk gospel in south San Gabriel church. I think her name was Nancy. Looks like the old guy knows what he’s doing.Wonder if you can play one.

  2. Yes her name was Nancy Van Gosbeck. She was wonderful. She would slip a little boogie woogie in some of the songs during the congrgational singing. Our pastor is making speakers out of cigar boxes that actually work. I dont know that we’ve ever met Joe but i know who he is. Keep up the great work Joe.

  3. -Dad, you can’t play these little guitars in the usual/normal way BUT I’m going to hook ‘em up like I do the vegetables & make a “strumming” sound come out!
-Mom that’s really cool that you can vouch for Dad’s memory about Nancy, and how your pastor is putting cigar boxes to good use! I’ll pass on your message on to Joe!
