33 Years Ago Today

richardvernonreads“saturday march 24, 1984…” these are the first words heard in the breakfast club, a movie that spoke to me as a teenager, and still speaks to me today. christy reminded me that today’s date was the same one spoken in the opening lines of the movie. here’s the audio. here’s the transcript:
“Saturday, March 24, 1984. ShermerHigh School, Shermer, Illinois, 60062. Dear Mr. Vernon…we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was that we did wrong, what we did was wrong. But we think you’re crazy to make us write this essay telling you who we think we are, what do you care? You see us as you want to see us…in the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions. You see us as a brain, an athelete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Correct? That’s the way we saw each other at seven o’clock this morning. We were brainwashed.”

  1. I don’t believe I saw that movie, but I think that’s a pretty powerful statement. maybe I’ll get it and watch it. with what we’ve read by John taylor Gato
regarding forced compulsory education, that statement sounds ahead of its time.
