The Midday Shift

I worked the midday shift at Homer’s yesterday for the first time since I cut my hours back to two days a week. It’s weird to think I used to work that shift every weekday for 4 years. It reminded me of that scene from Rumble Fish where Tom Waits’ character is working behind a counter and talking to himself, “When you’re young, you’re a kid, you got time, you got nothing but time. Throw away a couple of years, a couple of years there… it doesn’t matter. You know. The older you get you say, ‘Jesus, how much I got? I got thirty-five summers left.’ Think about it. Thirty-five summers.”
